01.18.08 Untitled #3 First Draft

Some songs are written about faith and others are written because of it. This is the second kind. And it’s still very rough of course, recorded literally seconds after the last lines were written, whispered while I was “watching” Brian‘s sleeping kids - but here’s what I have so far:

Untitled #3
Words and Music by Shaun Groves
Copyright 2008 shaungroves.com/ASCAP

I’m not your mother
I’m not your mother
I won’t wrap my love ‘round a sword
I’m not your father
I’m not your father
I won’t give up and make* for the door

I understand
As far as you know
I might cut you and call it a kiss
Make some promise and go off missed
Love don’t look like this**

And the whole wide world
Isn’t after you
No, we’re dodging demons too I swear***
No, the whole wide world
We’re not after you
We’re all busy too, trying to stand up here***

* I like “make” better than what I sang
** probably a background vocal, not the lead
*** Not quite what I’m wanting to say yet

Wow. Beautiful. As one who lost her mother to suicide and her father to jail when I was a child, this song really resonates at how I struggle to see God as a Father.
Thanks.

Hi, I’m a newbie from Texas found my way via BooMama. I’m a mom now so some of the issues, especially comments, brings out I feel- too much emotion from me. I guess it’s the nature of the topic of God to cause controversy.  However, God created moms-all things emotional. I am personally looking for fuel and encouragement from a blog (my emotions have to last me all day as a SAHM!)

Anyway, my four year old enjoyed this song as did I. Thanks for the “happy” post!

Thanks for stopping by, TBSL (whew, that’s quite a screen name you got there - Texas sized).

I think I usually serve up more “fuel” here than you got this week.  I’m a SAHD (most days) so I get where you’re coming from on needing a lift.  But I also need adult conversation about something other than whether Spiderman can beat up the Hulk and questions deeper than “Can I have jell-o if I take two more bites?” I try to offer both lifting and pondering posts.  This week was just a little lop-sided I’m afraid.

Thanks again for sticking your head in.  It’s always good to have fellow Texans around.

I’m not sure why, but ‘Love don’t look like this’ jumped out as an appropriate title for me with this song.  Beautiful song and melody- thanks for sharing it with us!

Can I post this video on my blog?  I was in Slidell when you finished writing, “My Enenmy” and sang it for us.  This is my favorite spot in the process...fresh, new, raw, not quite finished...and I don’t get to see it much.  Thanks.

Absolutley, Jacque.

I remember that night in Slidell.  I was scared to death to play that song for you guys.  New is always scary.

Sorry Shaun! My emotional rant was felt towards the unusual comments not your blog posts. Maybe I should just stick to reading the blog and skip the comments.

It’s great (the blog) by the way!

If you are a SAHD (which is cool!)what does your wife do?

Shaun...this is beautiful. I really like it, and I think it’s pretty cool that you’re sharing the songwriting process with us all a little bit. I’ve been writing some new songs lately, too, and it’s so interesting to see where a song starts and how it ends up. The thing is, I often forget how it started. So perhaps I should start recording those early moments sometime to give myself perspective.

So, sincerely, thank you. I’d love to hear this full version of this song someday.

No apology needed, TBSL, and please don’t stop posting comments.  Glad to have you here.

Thanks, Rachel for the kind words.  It’s hard to share new songs when I’m so aware of their faults.  I’ve been encouraged (so far) sharing them here though.
