06.30.08 Travel Tip: Wake Up

If using a cell phone’s alarm to wake yourself for an early flight home, it’s best, turns out, that it ring and not vibrate.

I missed my flight from Charlotte to Chicago this morning but flew stand-by on the next one out.  I’m now in the stand-by lottery once again.  (Come on! No whammies!) If all goes well I’ll be home for dinner this afternoon. If not I’ll be sleeping in Chicago.  The upside?  I’ll also be having Chicago pizza for dinner.

Oh, and the girl sitting next to me just got up and yacked in the recycling can.  I don’t think airport hot dogs recycle. And pizza suddenly doesn’t sound yummy.

------------

UPDATE: Big whammy.  I didn’t make the 2PM flight home so I’m trying again in a couple hours.  And, me thinks, I’ll likely be trying a couple hours after that as well.  Apparently - who knew? - a lot of folks vacation in the hot months commonly referred to as “Summer.” Not a lot of empty seats for guys flying stand-by.

I wonder if vomit girl’s feeling any better.

sick How do you manage to find the yacking people in airports? Granted, you take a few more flights than I do in a year, but I’ve never witnessed an airport puking. You must carry a dowsing rod that leads you right to the queasy of stomach.

Well, if you have to stay over and manage to regain your sense of hunger, go get some Gino’s pizza.  GINOS. That’s the best pizza in Chicago…

OH I hate it when I forget to make sure my phone is for the alarm!  Thankfully, even vibrate mode seems to wake me up.

There are quite a few less flights these days, too, so I suppose that doesn’t really help out matters.

Love the whammies reference.  wink

I just returned from Chicago and I have to disagree with you Nancy.  Giordano’s Pizza is the best.  The Taste of Chicago was going on this weekend not sure if it continues through today.

You definitely need a road manager that actually manages you while on the road… I’ll have to get right on that.

Hmmm seems like you have quite the airport experience. do you know how many times you’ve missed a flight in your career?

I made it!  I spent more time in the airport yesterday than I would have spent in a car had I just driven home from North Carolina.

I definitely need a road manager - or someone - anyone - on the road with me.  We’re all human.  We make mistakes.  But two humans together?  Odds are good that while one is being a human setting their alarm to vibrate, the other is setting theirs to ring. Two alarms are better than one.

Now, back to my day off.

I’m still stuck on the fact that you employed the word “yack” just now.

ha ha!

Glad you made it home, Shaun. I missed a flight out O’Hare once and spent my 8+ hours there wandering around and napping at empty gates. Not too bad.

Ugh. I hate flying and I’ve never even missed a flight. (Missed a connection once in Chicago, but that was weather’s fault, not mine, so the airline did everything they could to put us on their very next flight back to LAX - and I was still stressed out despite the fact that this happens to people all the time.) I can’t imagine what it would be like to fly standby as often as you seem to end up doing it. You’re a trooper!

As for cell phones on vibrate, that’s also a rather useless function when you’re a woman wearing an outfit with no discernible pockets, and therefore have to carry your cell phone in your purse. You can’t feel a purse vibrate. Thus, I have to make sure to never get separated from my wife immediately after church or a movie, because she’ll leave the thing on vibrate in her purse and I’ll have absolutely no way of contacting her.

But you’d be surprised how noisy a vibrating cell phone can be if left on the right surface.
