Not sure about the rest of the country, but here (North Dakota), we get a majority of our sugar from sugar beets grown locally. Makes me feel not *quite* so bad looking at those pictures, although I imagine any processed sugared food probably gets its sugar from a similar situation as the pictures.

Good point.  Where do you live in ND?  I live in Grand Forks and believe me I know we get the sugar from beets.  We can SMELL them all during the production cycle.
