08.21.05 From Pastor Sarah McLachlan
My pastor is a keen communicator but today his message on the tenth commandment bidding us not to “covet” was overshadowed and outgunned by Sarah McLaughlin. Her music video for “World On Fire” prefaced his message and created compulsions in me that three points on a screen and thirty minutes from a pulpit just didn’t. Amazing how powerful the duo of song and sight is for some of us, especially when tied to the lived example of giving.
I leave town tomorrow for El Salvador, where I’m promised I’ll walk through poverty like none I’ve seen before, and today’s plea from a rock star to take less in order to give more was a sobering preparation of my heart and mind for all that waits for me this week.

i was watching “Hogan knows best” the other night on VH1 (a show about hulk hogan and his family) and in this particular episode they were fighting with there community over how many animals they could own. the wealthy neighborhood they lived in had a council meeting and told them that they would have to get rid of two of their seven animals (we are talking about a rabbit and a rooster) or pay 100 dollars a day in fines. they opted for the fines.
thats 33,000 dollars a year. to keep a rooster and a rabbit.

I thought the video was extremely inspiring, but struggled to believe that the video only cost 15.00 to make. I realize that is the cynic in me, but while the beginning looked sparse and home-video’ish, surely it cost money to put all that info and footage on the screen.
Perhaps that is because everyone worked for free on the project, and that would make sense, because of the cause being served.
I do indeed get the sentiment of the video, but think it doesn’t need exaggerating in any way, shape, or form, to be effective!

Shaun, that music video is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. I really re-evaluated my life and my wants/desires after seeing everything put into perspective for me. The flood of information about the lives of the wealthy is hard to ignore in today’s celebrity-obsessed culture, but it sure falls away quickly in comparison to the truth.

I’ve seen the video and I know how it made me feel, a feeling of ‘get up off of your butt and DO something! to help’ It was very motivating and I think its a fabulous sermon, totally agree with you.
I’m sure that you’ll be challenged in El Salvador, I’m sure that you’ll learn and laugh and cry. . and more.
