05.21.08 Blogging For Kids And Badges
In case you missed it, I now work part-time for Compassion International running this thing we call Compassion Bloggers. Every month I’ll be sending out an e-mail (to folks who sign-up for it) asking bloggers to post about a specific Compassion-related need. Last month, for example, it was a campaign to buy malaria nets. Thousands of dollars were raised through the efforts of bloggers so that thousands of kids can now sleep without being bitten by a malaria-ridden mosquito. That’s thousands of kids released from disease.
I’m calling these little e-mailed thingies “assignments”, but think of them as “missions” or “directives” or “stuff to blog about when you’re out of stuff to blog about” if that’s better for you. No matter what they’re called, they’re important in mobilizing bloggers to use their words and their corner of the blogosphere to make real changes in the developing world.
There was not an assignment e-mailed out this month. We’ve been unable to send one because we’ve been building the new website and the database of bloggers and making sure the whole mass e-mail thing we’re using is compliant with every federal anti-spam law. But next month’s assignment is ready to go. Sign-up and I’ll send you an email about it next month. And we’ll change a little piece of the world together with our words.
And another thing. If you blog for Compassion like this on a monthly basis, I’ll send you a little bitty badge thingy you can put in the sidebar of your blog that simply says “I’m A Compassion Blogger.” That’s coming soon.
Thanks to those of you who have already signed up and blogged for Compassion last month. Help me spread the word about this will ya? Thanks.

Please make this little “badge thingy” Word Press friendly. I can’t get the Compassion Bloggers widgets to work on my blog for some reason.

What, in the past, hasn’t worked on your blog, Beth?

Hello Shaun. I have placed one of those corner banner things onto my blog - but changed a little of the code. I blog from Germany and linked it up to the new German Compassion site.
cheers

I got instructions from Brian and most things work, but for some reason, the widgets for the Bloggers site don’t. I loaded it into a “Text” box for widgets which is how I did the other ones on my site. I’ll try emailing Anne and see if she can help.

Now that will be handy!
Keep up the good work Shaun-o-rama

As long as we are letting you know stuff you really don’t want to hear - I had the widget for a small picture of a child with the information on clicking through to sponsor - it was called compassion sidebar banner #1 - not working so I took it off my site and when I’m on the compassion bloggers site it doesn’t appear to function. Just like announcing you are a doctor in a room full of tightwad hypochondriacs huh? I liked this widget originally because it was small enough to fit completely in the sidebar of my out of a box template on Blogspot. Thank you and I really love having the little corner widget on my site!

This sounds great!
I’m working on getting the corner banner installed. My template is being contrary. I may just add the sidebar widget. Decisions…
Thanks!
