08.13.07 I Needed A Reason
I needed a reason to buy a rap record. And I got one.
50 Cent says:
“Let’s raise the stakes. If Kanye West sells more records than 50 Cent on September 11, I’ll no longer write music. I’ll write music and work with my other artists, but I won’t put out any more solo albums.”
A good reason to buy the Kanye West record on September 11th. I’m marking my calendar.

Who’s Kanye West?

Bless you Mary Ann that you don’t know who Kanye West is. Hopefully you also don’t know who 50 Cent is, but somewhat sarcastically euphrony and I used our “gifts of interpretation” to echo Shaun’s sarcastic post that I’d even buy a Kanye West rap album (which I won’t really) if it means 50 Cent will stop making the garbage “gangsta” rap that he’s been putting out. I hope that helps and I’m so glad to know there are young people like you who love Jesus and music and the Bible who don’t get overly exposed to mainstream “bad art” to quote Derek Webb. You give me great hope as my wife and I are trying to raise 3 young daughters to be “in the world, but not of it”. God Bless and Keep the Faith!

hahahaha...kanye is basically the shiz...i think it would be awesome if he did a song with kirk franklin...or something...they are both pretty amazing...YAY!

the shiz? I didn’t feel bad about not knowing who the rappers are, but now my basic vocabulary has been called into question.

I don’t believe I’d buy a 50 Cent CD for....uh...FITTY Cent! Or a Kanye West CD for that matter...Although if KW outselling 50 will get one bad rapper off the market...I’m tempted!!! I’m praying by the time my girls get in middle school all music will be good! I know, it’s a long shot but I gotta HOPE! :-D

Maybe I should buy this Kanye West cd eh,
said:
just checking to see if this will post or not. so...i’ll say i hope they BOTH stop making solo projects...either that or they both find jesus. now THAT would be cool!! lol!

Might I remind you that every generation’s music has ALWAYS been loathed and detested by the previous generation. . . That’s just the way the cookie crumbles for some reason. . .
Oh and I think I might get the album. I’d rather have one person with a messiah complex over another. . . Maybe we can convince Madonna to do the same as 50?

Any word on the result of this? hehe

Shaun, your grassroots support of Kanye West seems to have worked and we may have seen the last of 50 Cent’s solo career (sniff, sniff) according to the attached article. I’m sure it held up. I’ll confirm next week when the sales results are final. Interesting week with Casting Crowns #4 in the top 200 (I posted about that on the board).

Not familiar with 50 Cent’s music, just know the name, but I’ve unfortunately heard too much from Kanye. He’s a big whining crybaby! “My song didn’t win this award, or my video didn’t win that award...I’m just gonna boycott MTV for not letting me win!! I’m taking my toys and going home!!” Maybe both of these whiners should stop making “music”.
shaunfan said:
Okay, it’s official that Kanye has crushed 50 (if you just use his first name) according to the attached article.

I’m actually kind of sad that over 1.5 million copies combined were bought last week of truly bad “art”. I’m still encouraged that Casting Crowns is number 12 on the top 200 with close to 200,000 copies sold in the first 3 weeks. Due to the backorders of ONIK, is this the week it cracks the top 200? Please let me know and I’ll report sales to Billboard for you.
Next week’s headline, Kanye West announces “if that soft rocker Shaun Groves outsells me this week, I’ll stop making rap albums but I’ll appear on his next album as a guest to thank him for his support in my conquest over 50”.

OK, I think we might be using the term “bad art” incorrectly. In a interview with Derek Webb, he was asked the question “What is your vision for the future of Christian arts?” Derek answered, “Sadly to say, for some people anyway, I think we’re running the risk over the next five or ten years of not having a Christian music industry anymore....I don’t think it’d be the worse thing in the world for Christian artists to have to get real jobs and really have to make great art that keeps us in the conversation. Because right now, you can get away with making bad art. And even just because you have a really good heart for the Lord, it gives you an excuse to make bad art. A lot of bad art is made in the name of ministry. And I think that is shortsightedness on behalf of artists in the church. We’re not taking seriously our role in kingdom building. Totally misrepresenting the character of our God by making really cheesy art in the image of a really great Creator. We are all little creators made in His image, and we’re making really bad art.”

Well then I hope “soft rocker Shaun Groves” outsells Kayne West.

CBS News 60 minutes quote “But if you want to understand how much the music world has really changed, talk to 26-year-old rap star Kanye West. He’s always been in the secular mainstream, producing hits for stars like Jay-Z and Alicia Keys.
West, who collected a leading 10 Grammy nominations this week, more than any artist this year, says that most of his friends in the record industry warned him against mixing Jesus with pop music. “People would be like, ‘Yo, it’s the best song I ever heard. But it will never make it on radio,” says West of his Grammy-nominated song, “Jesus Walks.”
“And it frustrated me. So the second verse, I wrote about how they say you can’t say Jesus on radio. And it was kinda like … the word Jesus was like saying the ‘N-word.’”
“It was like that. It’s gonna offend people for you to say Jesus. That’s what they were telling me,” adds West. “They said you could rap about anything except for Jesus. That means guns, sex, lies and videotape. But if I talk about God, my record won’t get played. Huh?”
You might think evangelicals would be thrilled by the success of “Jesus Walks,” but the song is controversial.
It mixes the names of Jesus and God with swear words – which may turn away part of the evangelical crowd. But West says he realizes that. “The song is not for them,” he says. “It’s speaking to the people that I think God is really trying to reach.”
And he’s referring to people who don’t go to church – the people he feels really need to hear the message of God. So, in order to do that, he had to create something completely different.”
