03.26.07 Covers
I love covers, a great (or not so great) song rerecorded by another artist. Ben Folds doing Postal Service. Obadiah Parker doing Outcast. What’s your favorite? And what would you like to see get covered?
*Typo: “Probably?” = “Probably.”

I like “Beautiful Day,” originally by U2 but redone by Sanctus Real. Sanctus Real made it better.
I guess I’d like to hear “Should I Tell Them” turned into a rap song. :^D
“yo, yo, should I tell them? fosho!”

I like Shaded Red’s version of “When God Ran” and Keith Green’s version of “The Easter Song.”
I’d like to see Shaun cover Cookie Monster’s “C is for Cookie.”

The U2 cover album is great and I love “Sunday Bloody Sunday” by Pillar. When it comes on my iPod I really turn it up and I think that’s how it’s supposed to sound. I also love Mandy Moore’s cover of “Only Hope” by Switchfoot and Sheryl Crow’s cover of “The First Cut is the Deepest” by Rod Stewart. The best cover I’ve ever heard is probably Goo Goo Dolls version of “Give A Little Bit” by Supertramp. It’s way better than the original.
I would like to hear “Follow You, Follow Me” by Genesis covered by Shaun. Maybe he could even do a re-write to give it a Christian message. Great tune (first song I heard this morning and the melody is still in my head).

I loved Nichole Nordeman’s cover of “Time after Time” on Live at the Door. I’ll have to think about the question awhile to decide the others.

Disciple did a really cool version of “More than a Man” originally by Stryper.
Of course, Stryper doing “Winter Wonderland” from the 80s.
Shaun Groves doing “Rocketown”

Fanmail doing a poppunk version of “Want it that Way” orginally from Backstreet Boys.
And Trace Bundy’s acoustic version.

Seventh Day Slumber doing “When the Children Cry” originally by White Lion.

Actually, there are so many good ones, I could go on forever. Now we just need to hear someone do “Final Countdown” by Europe. Well, not really.

There are tons I could name, but none really stick out in my head as something I would go back and listen to repeatedly.
Was this inspired by iTunes 80’s Pop Covers listing? Just curious.

Oh, as to what I might like to hear covered. How about downhere doing something from Queen, say “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”. Just would love to hear Marc Martel singing a Freddy Mercury song; it might be a little eerie in similarity.

I heard downhere do “We ARe The Champions” once. Eerily close to the original.

I also heard downhere do “We are the Champions” and Marc has such range he could sing anything and would have won “Rock Star:INXS” since they sang lots of Queen songs. I also liked Stellar Kart’s cover of “Livin’ on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi, Kathy Troccoli’s cover of “I Want To Know What Love Is” by Foreigner, Mark Schultz’s cover of “Kyrie” by Mr. Mister and Nichole Nordeman’s cover of “In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel. You can tell I’m an 80’s music fan.
As for other covers I’d like to hear, how about Shaun singing “Broken Wings” by Mr. Mister and Nate Sallie singing “Show Me The Way” by Styx.

Eric Clapton’s cover of “I’m Tore Down” is even better than Freddie King’s version.
Matthew Perryman Jones version of Foster’s “Hard Times” is pretty incredible
SRV’s cover of Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child” is also awesome
Shaun, you should so cover the Beatles “Dear Prudence.” Or if you really wanna have some fun, “Helter Skelter”!!
I’d also love to see Andrew Osenga cover the Beatles “I, Me, Mine” or Patty Griffin cover Dylan’s “Mr Tambourine Man.”

First Cut Is the Deepest I guess you could consider to be a cover of a cover
That song was first released by Cat Stevens way back in the day...I like Sheryl’s version as well...the original is worth a listen too…

For any of you country fans, there was a collection put out thru cracker barrel not too long ago that has Blake Shelton covering “The Gambler”...He’s definitely got the Kenny Rogers raspy thing down...Blake just nails it, I loved the recording…

Did a little searching and I never found a downhere “We Are the Champions” version on the web. I did, however, find them doing “We Will Rock You”. Very similar to Queen.
