R.E.M. is the best and most influential artist of its genre on this list of inductees. At one point (1987-1992), R.E.M. was my favorite band (I also wasn’t a Christian yet). “The One I Love”, “Stand”, “Losing My Religion” and “Everybody Hurts” were in heavy rotation and then unfortunately they lost me a bit with every release from “Monster” until the most current “Around the Sun” although I own all of them.
I have always respected Michael Stipe’s singing style and songwriting but don’t agree with just about anything he says. My vivid memory of Michael Stipe will always be his quirky body movements while singing “Losing My Religion” on SNL in 1991.
You can’t argue he isn’t passionate or didn’t propel the “folk alternative” or “college alt. rock” movement of the 1980’s.

Okay, now my most vivid memory of Michael Stipe is going to be this hilarious video of Weird Al interviewing him. I hadn’t watched the video yet when I wrote my earlier post. My favorite part has to be when Weird Al begs him to do the “truck backing up” impression again. Thanks for this, it was great!
