For good fiction reading, I’d recommend anything Colleen McCullough wrote.  Obviously, “The Thorn Birds” stands out, but also her historical fiction series about the end of the Roman Republic/beginning of the Roman Empire is excellent.

Also, Harold Bloom compiled an excellent anthology called “Stories and Poems for Extremely Intelligent Children of All Ages.” The title is a bit tongue in cheek, but the book’s thesis is basically that we can’t expect to become highly literate in the masters like Shakespeare, Donne, Chekhov, and Hugo, if we don’t begin on the foundations of Kipling, Carroll, Stevenson, and Andersen.  It’s packed with great short stories and poems.  It can be picked up and put down at will.  It’s a personal favorite.

If you’re looking for a real change of pace, how about picking up a play?  It’s a bit of a different reading experience, but a great way to open up to a genre of literature that doesn’t get enough exposure.  Try Christopher Fry’s “The Lady’s Not for Burning.” Brilliant play if underplayed.

I’ll chime in with Stephen about Christian bookstores, and if you have any designs on preventing your head from exploding, I’d stay away from the political equivalents of smutty paperbacks.

Sigmund is Cindy Morgan’s husband I believe.  Haven’t read his stuff but that connection alone makes me curious.

Yes, you are correct about the connection.

I haven’t read anything in the series he’s writing with Hank Henegraft.  Most of his stuff seems to go out of print pretty regularly.  But it is worth tracking down.

It depends on what you pick up in Christian bookstores for novels… However, I do find that too vast a majority of modern writers either aren’t that good, or spend too much time cooking up some wild love story that borders on scandalous… stick to the classics!

But there are some definite gems of Christian fiction. Frank Peretti’s “This Present Darkness” etc. is good. CS Lewis’ fiction is good (my personal favorite is “Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold"). GK Chesterton has some great fiction as well ("The Man Who Was Thursday” is a great read). Michael O’Brien has good apocalyptic fiction ("Sophia House” & “Father Elijah").

"Holy Mother, pierce me through. In my heart each wound renew Of my Savior crucified; Let me share with thee His pain, Who for all my sins was slain, Who for me in torment died. Let me mingle tears with thee, Mourning Him who mourned for me, All the days that I may live. By the cross with thee to stay, There with thee to weep and pray, Is all I ask of thee to give.”

I’m a big Harry Potter fan.  Last book comes out this summer.

My recommendations: Anything by Douglas Adams.  The Hitchhiker’s Guide series is excellent.
Also, I’m fond of East of Eden by John Steinbeck.

I’m another Harry Potter fan.  I can’t wait till it comes out this summer (as does the Order of the Phoenix movie)

And Douglas Adams is hilarious!  My brother lent me the Hitchhiker series (all five books in one).  It was SO funny and random.  I enjoy that kind of humor.

*Gasp* I LOVE Frank Peretti!!!  He is like, the greatest story-teller ever!! I’ve read The Oath, This Present Darkness, and I’m currently reading Piercing the Darkness.  I’ve also read some of the books he’s written for younger people, like Hangman’s Curse, Nightmare Academy, and (probably my favorite out of all of them) The Secret of the Desert Stone.  Here’s a plus: his books aren’t boring; they are perfect for someone with a short attention span.  I would definitely recommend Frank Peretti.

Also, though I haven’t finished it yet, Lord of the Rings is fun. Although some parts can seem a little too long, as a whole it’s pretty cool.

One last suggestion: The Bible!  It’s great! LOL

Oh wait...The Bible’s not fiction.  I was just on a roll naming books.  rasberry
