Have you heard Pierce Pettis’ music?  Rough voice, but full of power when he sings.  Great crafting of lyrics.  He’s been covered numerous times by the likes of Garth Brooks, Andrew Peterson, Sara Groves, and Joan Baez.

Personally, fame seems to have eluded his career.  But he is well know and respected by many musicians (thus the number of people who cover songs he wrote).  Good listening.  You can download a couple of free songs through Paste Magazine.

(I felt this could go either under Good Music or Good Words, as he fits both.  It ended up here.)

Hey Euphrony,

I’m glad you mentioned Pierce Pettis.  I haven’t heard his music for a long time. Need to get a listen to his newer stuff.

Who else can you recommend along the lines of his sound?

That Paste Magazine free download section also includes some songs from Jason Harrod (of Harrod and Funck).  I had not heard his music before finding it there, but he has a similar sound to Pierce Pettis.  Other than that, nothing is popping up right now.

Are there any you would recommend, with similar sounds or lyrical styles?

Hmmm…

Ever heard of Charlie Dodrill?

He’s more acoustic, not folk.  But good lyrics.  His “Under The Impression” rips my guts out some days.

Never heard of him before.  I checked out his site, listened to the streaming audio for a while.  At first blush, I like what I heard.  I’ll have to check him out again later, with fewer distractions.
