I have lots of favorites:

“Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth—in a word, to know Himself—so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves.” Pope John Paul II, Fides et Ratio

“Most modern freedom is at root fear. It is not so much that we are too bold to endure rules; it is rather that we are too timid to endure responsibilities.” GK Chesterton, What’s Wrong With the World

“There must, whether the gods see it or not, be something great in the mortal soul. For suffering, it seems, is infinite, and our capacity without limit.” CS Lewis, Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold

“Everyone…lives, above all, for love. The ability to love authentically, not great intellectual capacity, constitutes the deepest part of a personality. It is no accident that the greatest commandment is to love. Authentic love leads us outside ourselves to affirming others: devoting oneself to the cause of man, to people, and, above all, to God. Marriage makes sense…if it gives one the opportunity for such love, if it evokes the ability and necessity of such loving, if it draws one out of the shell of individualism (various kinds) and egocentrism. It is not enough simply to want to accept such love. One must know how to give it, and it’s often not ready to be received…” from a letter to “Teresa”, Karol Wojtyla (later, Pope John Paul II) (Dec. 1956)

"Holy Mother, pierce me through. In my heart each wound renew Of my Savior crucified; Let me share with thee His pain, Who for all my sins was slain, Who for me in torment died. Let me mingle tears with thee, Mourning Him who mourned for me, All the days that I may live. By the cross with thee to stay, There with thee to weep and pray, Is all I ask of thee to give.”

Good ones CC, I enjoyed reading the 1st and the last one.

Here’s a couple of sentences from a Email I rec today from a missionary friend of mine.

“I am so overwhelmed by the goodness of God and His Creative love. We can shop till we drop in every mall, Walmart, and flea market and never even come close to the great gift of a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes held by a mother.” M. Balk

Cristy,
I’m glad you enjoy that quote as much as I do.

DrewbieTech,
I don’t think you can go wrong with a favorite quote by A.W. Tozer. I have many of his words in my quote book.

Hey Shaun, I thank you for telling me about this site, and your right myspace is a bunch of crud, so is yahoo.

I much rather be sitting here, talking with ppl about god. Other than what I normally did in the past.

Your one of the ones that opened my eyes towards god,
Thanks!

Today on SHLOG I shared some quotes I found that have helped me feel normal about wrestling with scripture and have inspired me to keep at it.  This got me thinking about the power that other people’s words have over how we think, and how many great quotes have kept me on course or made me change course completely - or at least were part of that process.

What quotes have had an impact on you?

What quotes had and impact me? You mean in general, or in the bible, I know a few quotes had an impact on me because My dad and My mom made me read them over and over because of a few times, that ‘I had not seen the light’ so to speak

Hey SGListener, welcome to the message board!  grin

What quotes in general--Bible or otherwise--have impacted you?  I’m glad you revived this thread because I read some quotes from an old philosopher today that I thought were very cool and I couldn’t remember if we had a ‘favorite quotes’ thread here on the message board.  K, you share your quotes and then I’ll share mine.  LOL

Every poet and musician and artist, but for Grace, is drawn away from love of the thing he tells, to love of the telling till, down in Deep Hell, they cannot be interested in God at all but only in what they say about Him.

- C.S. Lewis, “The Great Divorce”

That is an amazing quote there.^

I don’t think I’ve ever been to this thread, so it’s alright that I join in now!

Here’s one:

God is at home.  We are in the far country. --Miester Eckhart (sp?)

And a quote from the Bible related to that is Hebrews 11:13-16.  (Familiar combination?)

I need to go find another one.
