i play bassoon.
i’m from texas, residing in nashville (except now...i’m in texas for a month).

I actually really wanted to play bassoon.  Just because it was really big.  I wasn’t all that into actual music when I joined the band in the sixth grade.  If I had to join I wanted to play something different...and large.  The bassoon is both. 

I played sax.  It was in our attic, stored for a relative.  Neither different nor large.

I played some bari-sax in high school - that’s rather large. But the alto and clarinet crammed in the top of the closet (which my patient wife puts up with) thankfully aren’t that big.

@Robyn - I listened to some of your recital pieces. Forgive my ignorance (it’s a high shame how little classical music I own or am aware of), do you have more information on the tunes? I liked the groove of the Latin Etude - that was happily unexpected. I don’t know much about bassooning (including the proper verb tense of bassoon), but it sounds great to me Very interesting instrument. (Oh, and your link to Concertino is borken).

shaun...if you ever want to learn to play bassoon, let me know.  i’d be more than happy to give you a few lessons on the beast

chris...here’s a few “notes”

latin etude: i heard the piece on a bassoon quartet CD (the caliban quartet - amazing group!).  i contacted the composer, who sent me the parts to that piece, and a few others of his.  i programmed the accompaniment on the computer and got really mad at the sound engineer for my recital who cut off the first 12 seconds of the piece.

adagio from the concerto: from carl maria von weber’s concerto for bassoon.  along with mozart’s concerto is one of the most widely played pieces of bassoon literature.  i played it far too fast because my pianist was nervous and wouldn’t slow down.

rigaudon: i heard this on a CD, played on 3 EWI’s (electronic wind intruments), and transcribed it for an ear training class.  then i programmed it in weird combinations and played the wierdest on my recital just to give people a break from the norm.

farewell to stromness: this is a piano piece that i heard as bassoon quartet, so i found the original piano music and wrote my own version of it.  i programmed the bottom 3 parts using this really nice software called Mach5...the bassoon actually sounds kinda real using it.  ha.

concertino: yeah...i moved it on my server...though i thought i just copied it...but it is at http://www.robynelise.com/robynrecital5.mp3.  i kind of played this piece in 9th grade...actually sight-read it for fun a few times.  and my teacher wouldn’t let me play this one piece so i settled on that one.

Found the caliban quartet on the web, but I couldn’t find any audio snippets up there, unfortunately. Sorta reminds me of a (probably not quite so) esoteric quartet, Turtle Island String Quartet. Got to see them when I was in college - cool group.

I wouldn’t have guessed your accompaniment was sequenced, sounds good.

On the rigaudon piece, I presume you’re playing an EWI, then?

I used to keep up more with tools like MachFive - I Googled it, too. Looks cool. It’s amazing what sort of things they can do these days with samplers. I’ve got a copy of GigaStudio and a Bosendorfer piano library (blogged about it here). You can hear some of the stuff I’ve done with it through here.

you can hear a little bit of the latin etude at the tail end of the stream for “banana” on the album “feast”.

is what i first heard of the piece...it’s a bit more jazz-y (this group swings a bit more, whereas caliban is more straight).  go down to the samples and click “see all” and it’s track 24 ("rock etude #16").

I was taught theory with piano.  Then a short stint in Trombone, followed quickly by guitar.  From guitar came the band and the need to learn bass.  I also fiddle with percussion.

My brother and I have a semi-professional band that plays 40-50 “shows” a year.  (It always looks strange to read that in print.)

My name is Rick Starr but to the people who know me, I am Starrman. I’m a singer/songwriter and wanna be guitar player from Irving,TX. I guess you can classify my style as California Folk. It’s Folk but I’ve had people say some of my stuff sounds like the Beach Boys. I just realized that the main influences in my style are Randy Stonehill, Steve Taylor and David Wilcox. I tend to write songs that are humorous but are really a serious commentary on life and our culture from a Christian perspective. My songs include “Always a Friend (but never a boyfriend)”, a song that Shaun asked me to sing at the Glorieta Singles Retreat last year. Another song of mine is called “Where Have all the Brunettes Gone?”, a parody on the old Pete Seeger song. I’m currently working on a more serious song dealing with suicide based on the impact one man’s suicide had on our church. I wasn’t sure if God wanted me to share my music with others but thanks to Shaun and the Glorieta Singles Retreat, I realized that He did. I started playing guitar at the tender age of 11.  I also play keyboards and make attempts at many other instruments.  I was a worship leader for 8 years for three different churches. 

I stepped down from a full-time position in my last church to focus on a band that we started in 2004 called STS.

I am the lead vocalist and guitarist.
