Since there is a thread under Good Music where we can post the name and artist of our song of the moment, I figured there should also be a thread in Good Words where we can post our song lyrics of the moment, any lyrics that either have really caught our attention lately, or that we’ve liked for a while and want to share with the others.

Pierce Pettis

Have you heard Pierce Pettis’ music? Rough voice, but full of power when he sings. Great crafting of lyrics. He’s been covered numerous times by the likes of Garth Brooks, Andrew Peterson, Sara Groves, and Joan Baez.

Personally, fame seems to have eluded his career. But he is well know and respected by many musicians (thus the number of people who cover songs he wrote). Good listening. You can download a couple of free songs through Paste Magazine.

Quaker Summer

I know there are people who read these boards who do not like any Christian fiction, but I have to recommend this book!

I’m not entirely finished with it, but it is by far one of the best Christian novels I have ever read. It is a woman’s novel, and has been chosen as the Women of Faith’s novel of the year. (not that that means anything, but I really enjoyed last year’s selection, Reconstructing Natalie about a 27 year old single woman with breast cancer as well)

It’s an exploration of what it means to follow the example of Jesus and to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God. It’s a book of healing and is written so authentically I’ve felt pierced to the heart and found tears in my eyes on many occasions while reading.

Again, it’s called Quaker Summer by Lisa Samson. I got it at Sam’s Club for about 8 dollars.

I tend to approach these topics carefully, somewhat skeptical. My daughter was getting her hair cut this past weekend and I forgot to bring something to read, we were close to a Wal-Mart and I picked this book up. Two of my friends had said they read it.

Has anyone else read it?

I was just curious about how many people read for pleasure and how often you read. Do you enjoy reading? Do you, like Shaun, prefer non-fiction or do you like fiction only?

I absolutely love to read and am always reading something.

I don’t read fiction generally. Essays like those by David Sedaris, I’ll read but not novels. It reminds me of having to read for school. But I’d like to start up again in 07. A boring resolution I know but…

The Parables

I was at a church a few months back and heard a shady interpretation of one of Jesus’ parables. I knew I didn’t agree with what the guy said Jesus was trying to tell us with his story, but I also didn’t know what I thought it meant. So I went looking for answers and found a lot of people referencing a book called The Parables: Jewish Tradition and Christian Interpretation by Brad Young.

It might be the most boring thing I’ve ever read. Brad repeats himself a lot; so much that every paragraph could be half as long. (And this is me, the master of long-windedness, talking.) BUT, the information in the book is great. (Which has me wondering what you think makes a book “good.” Guess it depends on why I’m reading it.)

I like this book, even though its not concise or all that well organized, because it says things I need to know. It completely changes the way I read the parables of Jesus. Understanding the Jewish culture Jesus came from and spoke to has given me new insight into these odd little stories of his. It changes the way I see God. And that changes everything.

I recommend it if you’ve tried to understand a parable and got stuck or are just interested in understanding Jesus’ Jewishness better. I don’t recommend it if you’re into creative writing or getting to the point in a hurry.

I’m looking for something else on the subject of parables to read - cuz I guess I’m officially a nerd. Any suggestions?
